The Girl in the Photograph (1996)
The fire in her heart went out today,
she said it was for reasons of economy
She said, "Don't worry it'll all become clear."
But the cracks in the mirror...
...are starting to appear
And the cracks in the ice...
...are starting to appear
And the cracks in the ice...
...are starting to appear
Got no reason to question her
Got no reason to criticise
But the girl in the photograph
Is a stranger in disguise
She tried so hard from the very start
To keep all her dreams alive
But she hammered each mistake into her heart
Like iron nails, into the cross of life
So she shut up shop, closed it all down,
no emotional allowed in, certainly none let out
This stranger to anger, hate and fear,
just turned tail and fled...
...away from here
She ran away...
...away from here
She ran away...
...away from here
She hasn't listened to a single word
Has miss confidant nothing left to learn?
The girl in the photograph
Could happily watch us all burn
She tried so hard from the very start
To keep all her dreams alive
But she hammered each mistake into her heart
Like iron nails, into the cross of life
It's in her voice, it's written across her face,
can't she cope with this disgrace?
Where's the caring soul that attracted us all,
I can't see her there...
...behind those eyes at all?
Can't see her there...
...behind those eyes
Can't see her there...
...behind those eyes
She built this wall to keep us out
To hide from me and you
But the girl in the photograph
Is shutting out God's love too
She tried so hard from the very start
To keep all her dreams alive
But she hammered each mistake into her heart
Like iron nails, into the cross of life
