Just to say I, too, watched 'When Satan Came To Town' last night and, like you, was appalled at how obsessed the social workers seemed to be with finding evidence for what they thought was going on. And I was shocked and saddened at the life-long effects their actions (and not those of their parents) had on those children. I've posted about it on my own blog.
Paul.

Thanks for your comments Paul, I'd post something on your site, but the work firewall prevents me. My wife is currently studying child psychology and could not believe how the interviews were being carried out; it broke all rules for carrying out any kind of interview let alone ones on children.

I could have added more but is all so terrible, the girl who cried for a full 17 mins whilst the Social Worker tried to interview her, the boy who said the ghost touched him on the stomach (which was substituted for genitals in court) and the lad who drew a picture of a Mr Man which the Social Workers were worried about as the Mr Man had no clothes on.

I saw the show too and was going to write about it here this morning, you've saved me the bother Jimbo.

I was appalled with the behaviour of the Sociel Services representatives named in the programme. They committed the child abuse in my mind and should be in prison for the harm they committed.

I wholeheartedly agree mate - the two Social Workers seemed to be acting with a holier than thou attitude. I suggested prison to K last night, might make them stop and think what liberty they have taken away from the kids, what was something in the region of 30+ years in total?

As for the anonymous source, sure there's a place for investigation - doing nothing after an allegation would be seen as a lack of care. But way way WAY too much was done with no reason.

Are there structures in place to make sure this stuff doesn't happen any more? Glad that the names etc have been released and the people had a chance to tell the whole story, but is this name and shame going to make sure this doesn't happen again?

Did you find out where the allegations came from in the first place?

Interesting you should mention the names. At the time no one could talk about what was happening, so parents could not get media or local MP support for their battles. It was a few local people against the whole of Rochdale Social Services. I'm not being awful here, but the parent's didn't come across as great intellectuals hence why their treatment by Social Service was even more shameful.

The allegations came from a general mass hysteria particularly amongst Social Services that Satanism was rife throughout the country (hence the Salem/McCarthy reference) - see Orkney cases around the same time. There was also guidance from America which involved a checklist in spotting Satanic abuse, as you can guess most of it was hysterical nonsense.

One thing I was talking to L about while we were watching it was the whole Satan issue and where that might have come from.

Now I can understand hysteria about paedophile rings, but why Satanic covens. Could it be that there were a lot of rather rabid fundamentalist Christians within social services who believed this kind of thing occured?

I've never actually heard evidence of a Satanic group like this ever being proved to exist.
