The Morning After

Well last night was the first night of the new licensing laws. A freezing cold Thursday night to boot.
And this morning there is a palpable air of disappointment amongst the hundreds of news journalists who were sent out with police patrols last night to witness the armageddon of vomit and violence that was going to herald the end of civilisation as we knew it.
Birmingham, Newcastle, Bristol, Edinburgh, the list of towns and cities these camera crews went to last night is nearly endless. And absolutely bugger all happened. The only people that we saw interviewed on the telly were students (at least I assumed the people in Newcastle were students as I could understand more than one word in ten).
What where they expecting though? A Daily Mail inspired pandemic of debauchery? Well it was a bit nesh for that really wasn't it? Even the perennial vest top clad slappers from Newcastle had cardies on last night.
Fortunately for the TV shows though, some bright spark had the idea of painting the whole evening as a FAILURE of government policy, rather than a FAILURE of their scare stories.
Thursday may be the new friday in terms of going out on the lash but rest assured, friday is still the whole friday and the vomiting and violence will no doubt be back tonight.

1) I was in Newcastle the other week and it was full of scousers.
2) I was in the pub last night (it has an extended licence until 2pm) and it was the earliest we have ever left the place (used to do lock-ins)...ah Lock-ins never will we have the joy of talking about sitting around darkly lit pubs whilst the landlord raced around checking his curtains were properly closed....it's the end of an era.
