Rachel Nevada (1996)
Feels like I died a thousand deaths but I only died three times in her arms tonight
In Rachel, Nevada, near Tonopah, where the flyboys play with stealth
The Highway Patrol chases flying saucers to Socorro New Mexico
And I chase romantic delusions from here to White Sands AFB
It's not really much of a town, just trailers and a diner or two
But we get by selling t-shirts to the beardies chasing the UFOs
There's a sign that says 'The Extra-Terrestrial Highway' where they stop to take a picture or two
We all live our lives in the middle of the middle, of the ass of the back or beyond
I've got friends in Orange County LA who videod OJ's white bronco
And family across in Littleton, Colorado, who climb Pike's Peak just for laughs
I once met a girl called Tina from DC, who spoke to me soft words in Spanish
I wish I understood what she said that night or how I could ever find her again
Sam sips champagne in The Belle Aurora on my battered Motorola TV
Spotters hunt blackbird's baby outside but I'm bored with the lights in the sky
I'm trying to put all the pieces together, of the jigsaw that I call my life
Some of the pieces are missing but finding the edges would be a start
The DA wants to fry two kids in Delaware who had to grow up too soon
My old lady's just turned eighteen and we got a kid on the way
The fat cats destroyed Hillary's healthcare plan and I've got to pay the med bills somehow
There's no Doctor Cosby or Doctor Green here, just Advil, Liquor and Steinbeck made real
I read a book called a 'A course in miracles' and I pray for my unborn daughter each day
I wish I could offer her more than a trailer and a pickup, the dust and afternoon heat
This town's big on Joshua and Jesus, Ricky Lake and TV sports
We've got no sidewalks or streetlights but we can all see the stars
I watch her dream of being somewhere else than wrapped in a trade blanket with me
I light a cigarette to calm my nerves and write this song just to pass the time
I've fought the little deaths for hours and hours to remain awake throughout this night
Because here in Rachel Nevada or anywhere else, there's no beauty like a sleeping girl lit by moonlight
