About Me

Posted by Harry on 5th February 2005 in Site News | 1232 views

Hello dear reader, you have reached the traditional "about me" page.

My name is Harry, I'm a website editor and journalist currently working mainly in the field of interactive entertainment.

What's interactive entertainment?

It's a posh way of saying videogames, which sounds a bit childish and people in the business like to pretend we're all grown up.

They aren't fooling anyone.

Any road up.

Though originally from Manchester I now live in West London with my beautiful wife and our two gorgeous little children, who at the time of writing, are just learning to walk and say their first few words.

About This Website
The Cartmel Bar Blog is my private web presence where I tend to steer clear of gaming related topics. You're more likely to find waffle about fundamentalist Christians, evil landlords or football results. This site also plays host a blog where a few of my friends can vent their spleen.

For some time I ran another blog called GrumpyGamer which was rather popular. Right now I'm working on a new site called godhatesgames.com, which hopes to cover issues surround matters of faith and interactive entertainment.

The original purpose of the site was to play host to articles written about Lancaster University reunions organized by my good self and co-blogger Jimbo. This content first appeared on my ISP private home pages and grew into a more feature-rich site with a variety of content.

In 2004 I took the decision to find a proper home for this content and I spent quite some time trying to decide on a domain name. Eventually, given the focus on the Lancaster University articles, I realised Cartmel Bar was the ideal name for the site as I spent much of my three years at uni in Cartmel College Bar. The original North Spine bar that is, not the new hideous abomination sliding off the southern end of Bailrigg Hill.

Editorial Services
Since November 2004 I've held the position of UK Editor at the commercial games website Boomtown.net. Here I manage day-to-day running of the site, oversee a team of freelance writers, act as the English-language point of contact and produce in-house content.

I'm also available in a freelance capacity to fulfil your content/editorial needs. I've a broad portfolio and over seven years experience as a journalist and editor both in print and online.

My current/past client list includes:

  • Oxygen Interactive - Editorial Consultant
  • Next-Gen - Staff Writer
  • Xploder - Content Editor
  • Supanet - Motoring, Games, Kids & Competitions Channel Editor

  • Welcome to Harry's Blog. Here you'll find the trials and tribulations of one Harry Neary, single bloke (2004), married (2006), father of twins and widower (2007), married (2008) and soon to be father again (2009). A rough ride with some amazing highs and tragic lows. Think of this place as another parent blog, without all that whinging about what cracked nipples feel like.
