I've Been Defrauded
A transaction appeared on my bank statement last month for just £12.87 that I didn't recognise. But with everything that's been going on I didn't pay much attention.
However the same company and the same amount appears on my online banking statement again today.
The company is called Singlesnet and according to a quick Google search it is, as the name suggests, and online dating site based in the USA.
Now there's no reason to suppose this company is involved in the fraud, but someone is using my card to pay a monthly subscription for their services.
I've just phoned my bank and I have to say they were super helpful. And because the fraudulent transaction was a card payment rather than a direct debit, cancelling the card will stop this happening.
So that's what we've done, cancelled the bank card. No problem there, I've still got online banking access and can withdraw from my local branch with id.
I'm annoyed because I'm always good with online security and always tell people it's so secure. And I'm wondering now which of the online stores I use has misused my card details or has been hacked.
Thankfully I'm only out of pocket by just over £25, but I'm still not happy about this. I think in future I may just use my credit card rather than my bank card online - with its relatively low limit if I ever get stung it can't be for lots of money.

Hence why I use a credit card most of the time these days and just pay it straight off at the end of the month.
It's almost guaranteed someone will notcie an unrecognised subsctription coming off, and will cancel it. However a one off transaction could easily go through before anything was done about it.
I REFUSE to use my bank VISA debit (I have to have one for a bank ATM card). I just removed the sticker and refuse to use it. i use my regular credit card instead. They never have a problem.
The times that there has been somebody using them for calls in 3rd world countries...the bank computer calls me up and informs me! And they just deleted them from my account (happened in the late 90s/early 2000s).
to my knowledge, that has not happened since.
I would not use the debit card anymore if I were you. But then I am on a crusade against them...my family knows not to talk about their debit card usage in front of me...makes me very sore.
