For the Red Scarf Rebels
Back in 1989, I along with 24 fellow pupils from St. Annes RC High School in Heaton Chapel Stockport, visited Leningrad (now St Petersburg) and Moscow. It was a fascinating trip organised by the school's history department and a good laugh too. This was back in the days of the Soviet Union and so we got to see the old empire before the Berlin Wall fell and the Soviet Block collapsed.
Anyway I've been doing a little bit of searching in Google Earth and have managed to find the hotel we stayed at in Leningrad, the Sovetskaya. I've put a photo of the place taken with Google Earth below along with a wider shot showing that blue cathedral that was just a short walk away. I've not managed to find our hotel in Moscow yet because I can't remember what it was called.

And just for a laugh, here's the picture of us all, aged 15-16 in Moscow's Red Square in 1989.

It was a very relaxed trip that had us using teachers' first names.
There's also a star of Coronation Street on that photograph.
