Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells
What is it with so many mainstream Christian groups these days? So the BBC shows Jerry Springer the opera and suddenly we hear all these noisy Christians launching themselves at the nearest microphone.
Why is it we can hear their voices when something should be suppressed or banned? Why is it that we hear them when two people of the same sex want to make a public commitment to each other? Or when JK Rowling publishes another book? Where is their voice of love, and more to the point when do you ever hear them actually talking about Jesus?
I found these people speaking for me and my faith much more distasteful than any opera. And remember these were the same people who flocked to Mel Gibson's snuff/porn flick and described it as a spiritual experience. There not the smartest people if their emotions can be so easily tickled in this way.
I hate censorship and control of freedoms with a passion. I hate the idea of suppressing ideas. 2000 years ago the early Christians were being surpressed for sharing their ideas, their writings. Yet this often the way, the abused becoming the abuser.
There is talk of launching blasphemy cases against the BBC for showing the opera. Talk of wanting more control over what broadcasters are allowed to get away with. The irony is that if we had such controls it wouldn't be very long before they were used to shut up these book-burning crusading Christians and their urge to extinguish the creative spark from life.
Every cloud has a silver lining then.
